American Tilapia Import Profile

Imports of tilapia in the United States fell by nearly 20%, and it is still further declining. At the same time, data show that US tilapia imports fell by 12% in the first eight months, from 136,000 tons to 119,173 tons, and their imports were also Synchronous declines to $4,459 million.
Among them, frozen tilapia fillets accounted for 75,530 tons, and imports amounted to 2.883 billion US dollars, accounting for 42% and 65% of the total imports of tilapia products, respectively. Its volume decreased by 14% year-on-year, and imports fell by 20%. The average price dropped from $4.08/kg to $3.81/kg.
China is still the largest supplier of tilapia in the United States. Indonesia supplies tilapia in the second place with a total of 4,186 tons, Mexico with 354 tons and Taiwan, China with 398 tons.
China exported a total of 68,885 tons of tilapia fillets to the United States, accounting for 91% of its frozen tilapia fills. However, its import value accounts for about 86%, which shows that the price of Chinese tilapia exports is lower than that of other countries. The data shows that the price of Chinese tilapia fillets is lower than the average price of US$3.58/kg.
Vietnam, Malaysia, Honduras and Thailand are also stable suppliers of American tilapia. In contrast, the US imports of chilled tilapia fillets accounted for about 15%, and as of August, its import volume was 17,869 tons, a slight decrease of 1 percentage point from last year. Its imports accounted for about 24%, down 5% year-on-year to US$1.08 billion.
Among the suppliers of chilled tilapia fillets, Honduras, Colombia and Costa Rica occupied the top three, while Mexico exported to the United States, which accounted for the fourth place. Among them, the export volume of Honduras and Ecuador decreased compared with last year, and most of the countries in the region showed a growth trend.
In terms of price, the average price of chilled tilapia fillets in Ecuador and Honduras was 5.52, 5.83 US dollars/kg, Costa Rica was 6.13 US dollars, Mexico was 7.53 US dollars/kg, and Colombia was 7.66 US dollars/kg.
